Cheryl Francis and Sam Tannahill founded their “Francis Tannahill” label in 2001. You might know their handiwork already – their “day job” is running the other winery they co-own – A to Z Wineworks! You know, only the largest production winery in Oregon, found in all 50 states and probably on a shelf within walking distance from you. As a shop focusing on boutique producers, you probably won’t find any A to Z here – but the Francis Tannahill side project is their chance to get geeky and make the super-premium kind of wine they love! From over 400,000 cases of wine produced annually at A to Z, the focus under this label is on just over 1000 cases. Big difference.
The Hermit is sourced 100% from a single vineyard in the Dundee Hills called “Pearl” and is Demeter-Certified Biodynamic. The nose starts off with cranberry sauce and roses plus another floral note, like violets. The deep rich color is a precursor to the dark plummy flavors. Deftly balanced with tongue-clinging acidity the intense cherry finish is extremely long. This is an absolutely massive wine and it’s no wonder it got a massive score from Robert Parker. Could stand up to something along the lines of roast beef or duck confit. No need to lay this one down at all I think it’s in peak drinking condition.
