The Eyrie Vineyards is the WIllamette Valley’s oldest modern winery. Their wines have stood the test of time and their commitment to quality has never wavered in 50+ years. Every Eyrie wine is crafted with through non-intervention with sustainability, ageability, and purity in mind.
The Original Vines are the small block of vines that founder David Lett planted in 1965 thus starting the modern era of the Willamette Valley wine industry. The Pinot Gris vines he planted are actually the oldest Pinot Gris vines anywhere outside of Europe! These craggly old things yield bunches of grapes with minuscule berries thus producing wines of unparalleled power and nuance.
The Eyrie Original Vines Pinot Gris is just about the most profound domestic white wine you will ever find. Top notes of apple, apricot and grapefruit tinged with summer flowers mingle with beeswax, brioche, quince and such base notes as crushed rock and machine oil to make an unforgettable drinking experience. This is one even worthy of the cellar as it will gain complexity with a few years of bottle aging.
From Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
Planted in 1965, these are the oldest examples of this variety in the country. Jason Lett showcases this special fruit in this natural wine with no sulfites added and no cold stabilization. Light gold in color, the crisp apple flavors are forward, the balance is spot on and the finish polished. Drink now through 2020. 92 pts.
