The Gargantua project was launched by Josh Bergstrom in 2013 as a way for him to delve into Rhone-style Syrah winemaking right here in the new world. The first release of Gargantua was offered only in 6-packs in which the consumer received 3 bottles each of 2 different Syrah sources: Oregon and California. The California was expectedly rich and plush and the Oregon offering, with its cooler climate, was much more “Northern Rhone” style – showing more herbaceousness and fresh cracked black pepper notes. I offer these wines to you as a collector who would probably not have been able to get their hands on this wine any other way.
With the 2015 offering, the project expanded to include a Washington offering. I am proud to offer all three selections from the 2015 vintage, but be sure to pick them up quick, because they are in VERY short supply.
From the Winery:
The 2015 Gargantua Syrah from Washington is our first release of this highly anticipated addition to the lineup. It hails from the ‘Les Collines’ vineyard in Walla Walla, Washington and comes to us by way of a fruit trade with our friends from Gramercy Cellars. The 2015 Gargantua Washington is perhaps the most fruit-driven wine of the three Syrahs. It is guided by dry herbs, floral potpourri, sweet blackberry, dark raspberry and slight green peppercorn notes. This is a ripe, sweet wine with a great core of fruit and a fine, ripe tannic structure. There is a wonderful savory finish to this wine and this Syrah continues to unfold and unfurl in bottle ever since it was bottled.
