Description
The Gargantua project was launched by Josh Bergstrom in 2013 as a way for him to delve into Rhone-style Syrah winemaking right here in the new world. The first release of Gargantua was offered only in 6-packs in which the consumer received 3 bottles each of 2 different Syrah sources: Oregon and California. The California was expectedly rich and plush and the Oregon offering, with its cooler climate, was much more “Northern Rhone” style – showing more herbaceousness and fresh cracked black pepper notes. I offer these wines to you as a collector who would probably not have been able to get their hands on this wine any other way.
With the 2015 offering, the project expanded to include a Washington offering. I am proud to offer all three selections from the 2015 vintage, but be sure to pick them up quick, because they are in VERY short supply.
From the Winery:
Our Gargantua Syrah from California comes from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. The vineyard is perched high up on the silty Limestone hillsides of the Z block overlooking the SantaMaria Valley, with the Pacific Ocean to the west. This awesome wine that represents everything I love about Syrah. It has a style reminiscent of a Cornas from the southern end of the northern Rhône valley.
This inky dark wine has meaty aromas of olive tapenade, black salted licorice, creosote, savory herbs, tomato leaf…. Is this liquid pizza? In a wonderful way, this wine is almost devoid of any discernible fruit characteristics as it is a savory, earthy, salty and just plain delicious with fine melting tannins. This is going to be so much fun to drink and watch evolve over the years.
