Authentique owner Nicholas Keeler is the North American sales director for Tonnellerie Allary, one of the most prestigious French Wine Barrel producers – so you can bet that an optimum barrel program is a major part of the Authentique aesthetic.
Coats and Whitney is a vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA which belongs to a label that goes by the name “CAW” but they sell a portion of their fruit each year. Past recipients of this fruit include Raptor Ridge, Big Table Farm, Omero and Elk Cove.
2014 was the first year that Nicholas worked with this site for his Authentique label, and I feel that his winemaking hand and know-how with oak really helped this site realize its potential. It’s a site that wants to be big and smokey and Nicholas was not shy about letting those qualities shine through. This is a wine that jumps out of the glass. In fact, when the rep for the winery poured it for me, it immediately filled the room with its floral and jammy aroma.
This is a wine I would pour for a Cabernet lover, or someone who thinks Pinot Noir is “too delicate.” This wine has big grip and firm tannins, even after a couple years of mellowing in bottle. In fact, not only would I recommend pairing with hearty fare, I really recommend decanting this one for about a half hour before drinking – just to let the tannins soften a bit. The last thing to say about this wine is the wonderfully long finish. I could still taste the cola and berry flavors in my mouth a full minute after drinking. 90 pts. – Wine Enthusiast
